DUNEDIN – The Dunedin City Commission unanimously voted to maintain the current operating hours at Honeymoon Island State Park and Caladesi Island as a response to a recommendation by the Department of Environmental Protection to close state parks for three days a week.
While it does not appear that the Senate or the House of Representatives will vote to approve department’s recommendation, the city wanted to make a stand to support these parks. The commission said that Honeymoon Island gets about a million visitors each year, and these parks are vital for Dunedin’s economy.
Mayor Dave Eggers said that in the current economic climate, more people are staying closer to home, so it is crucial that these local parks maintain their current operating hours.
Florida state parks are open from 8 a.m. until sundown 365 days a year.
