DUNEDIN - The Dunedin Youth Guild ended a very successful year and is beginning its planning for the year to come.
The 2008-2009 Board of Directors will be continuing their current positions, serving for their second term are President Susan Wilson, Vice President Becky Eggers, Recording Secretary Sharon McDonald, Corresponding Secretary Paula Bratyanski and Treasurer Barbara Cooper.
The Dunedin Youth Guild was organized 45 years ago with the mission to support local young people. This group of women has†donated thousands of dollars in many areas from educational assistance to recreational support.
During 2009 alone, eight classrooms were adopted at three of the local public elementary schools and Our Lady of Lourdes. Funds were donated to Dunedin Middle School toward the Band and Junior National Honor Society. Money was donated to Sea Cadets, Dunedin High School for Grad Night, Cosmetology Programs and Step Team.
The Dunedin Youth Guild also donated a $3,000 installment towards its†pledge†of $25,000 to the Dunedin Community Center was given to the City Of Dunedin.
The Guild awarded $13,000 in scholarships to the following students: Brynne Acardi, Mariah House, Mara Hustson, April Stratemeyer, Pakou Yang, Shahnaz Rashid, Zerina Arapovic, Vincent McCoige and Jacob Sperber.
A savings bond was awarded to a Turn Around Student at Dunedin High School. Palm Harbor University High School student Heather Marascal also received a college scholarship.
Eight college students were awarded continuing education scholarships for maintaining a 3.0 scholastic average or above.
At the elementary level the Guild continues to fund the Julian Award in honor of Julian Gonzales Hargis, a preschool student who passed away five years ago. This year the savings bonds were awarded to Hunter Markowich recipient of the Julian Butterfly Award, and Connor Sweeney recipient of the Julian Award for their success this school year.
The Dunedin Youth Guild raises most of its funds through two fundraising events. The 2009 Holiday Tour of Homes will be Saturday, Dec.5. The Scholarship Luncheon Fashion Show will be Saturday, March 6 2010.
The guild is open for membership to all interested women. Meetings will begin again in September and take place the third Tuesday of each month beginning with a light supper served at 6 p.m. followed by a business meeting at 7 p.m.
