DUNEDIN – The Dunedin City Commission awarded contracts on June 18 that signal coming improvements to the library and two city roads.
A contract was approved with Midkiff Construction Services Inc. for $149,150 to improve the Dunedin Public Library entryway. The project scope includes an outdoor reading amphitheater, enhancements for the butterfly garden, installation of outside furnishings and installation of a water feature.
The entryway will have WiFi accessibility, so people may use the area as an extra room to use laptops or to read.
The commission has designated Penny for Pinellas funds to pay for the project.
The amphitheater will seat about 20 kids or 10 adults, and the other outdoor seating area should seat about 30 people, library representatives said.
Mayor Dave Eggers said he is pleased to support the project, especially since it is being used more due to the bad economy. He said the library is a beacon and that the Dunedin Library is picking up the slack of other area libraries cutting hours and services.
Contract awarded to pave Dunedin roads
A contract was awarded to Florida Highway Products Inc. for $543,365 to resurface Solon Avenue and Lake Haven Road.
The commission was told that by using a microsurfacing technique that they will be able to pave a much greater area for much less cost. The roads should be good for about 10 years, they were told, which is just a few less than if the company were to rip up the roads and do a more traditional paving technique.
The microsurfacing will also allow segments of road to be completed within the same day, which is much less trouble for residents, the commission was told.
Report shows city’s finances are strong
An annual audit of Dunedin’s finances showed no significant discrepancies and revealed that the city’s finances remain strong, according to a report to the City Commission June 18. The report also showed that the city has a comfortable amount of money set aside in case of an emergency.
Eggers said he was pleased with the report. He had believed the city was in a good place financially, but he said he was glad to have the report and solid numbers to back him up.
