DUNEDIN – The Florida Department of Education has released the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test results.

Pinellas County third-graders had mixed results in reading and mathematics.

The tests are scored on a five-point scale, with five being the highest, and students need at least a three or higher to be deemed passing. Third-graders need at least a score of three on the reading test to pass to fourth grade. Some students who fail have the opportunity to make it up with extra study and a re-take the test in the summer.

Pinellas County as a whole remained the same as last year in reading, with 72 percent of students scoring at least a three. Statewide, 72 percent of students scored a three or higher in reading, up from 71 percent last year.

Scores went down slightly in math, dropping to 77 percent of students passing from 78 percent in 2008. Statewide, scores were up to 78 percent from 76 percent in 2008.

Third-graders in Dunedin scored slightly lower in reading as compared to 2008, with two schools getting lower percentages of students scoring a three or higher, one school remaining the same, and one school getting a higher percentage. The results are as follows:

• Curtis Fundamental Elementary – fell to 88 percent from 94 percent in 2008

• Dunedin Elementary – fell to 64 percent from 78 percent

• Garrison-Jones Elementary – remained the same at 86 percent

• San Jose Elementary – rose to 87 percent from 81 percent

In math, two Dunedin schools had a higher percentage of students scoring a three or higher on the test, and two schools had a lower percentage of students who passed. The results are as follows:

• Curtis Fundamental Elementary – rose to 96 percent from 94 percent

• Dunedin Elementary – fell to 71 percent from 84 percent

• Garrison-Jones Elementary – fell to 84 percent from 91 percent

• San Jose Elementary – rose to 86 percent from 84 percent

Pinellas County students scored on par with the state in FCAT reading and math scores. In reading, the county average scores for fifth- through ninth-graders all were slightly above the state average for students who scored at or above grade level (or a score of 3, 4 or 5). Grades four and 10 had the same percentage of students as the state average who scored a 3 or higher.

County average science scores for fifth-graders were the same as the state average at 46 percent of students scoring a 3 or higher. Pinellas science scores for 8th- and 11th-graders were slightly lower than the state average.

“We applaud the efforts of teachers for increased scores in FCAT reading, math and science,” said Superintendent Julie M. Janssen in a press release. “While we will continue to emphasize reading and writing as essential skills, math and science instruction will be a primary focus next year. Every school will receive the support of a trained math/science coach to enhance instruction.”

The county reading averages are as follows:

• Grade 4 – 74 percent scoring at or above grade level in reading, tying with the state level

• Grade 5 – 72 percent versus 71

• Grade 6 – 67 percent versus 66

• Grade 7 – 68 percent versus 67

• Grade 8 – 56 percent versus 54

• Grade 9 – 48 percent versus 47

• Grade 10 – 37 percent, tying with the state

The county math averages are as follows:

• Grade 4 – 75 percent scoring at or above grade level, tying with the state level

• Grade 5 – 62 percent, tying with the state

• Grade 6 – 55 percent, tying with the state

• Grade 7 – 60 percent, tying with the state

• Grade 8 – 66 percent, tying with the state

• Grade 9 – 69 percent versus 68

• Grade 10 – 66 percent versus 69

The county science averages are as follows:

• Grade 5 – 46 percent, tying with the state level

• Grade 8 – 40 percent versus 41
