DUNEDIN - A Saturday night apartment fire followed by a fire at a duplex on Sunday kept Dunedin firefighters busy through the Fourth of July weekend.
Firefighters responded to a structure fire alarm about 11:47 p.m. on July 4 at Logarto Apartments, 250 New York Ave.
According to a report from the fire department, firefighters found a light smoke haze in the second and third floor area and a dumpster on fire in the first floor trash room.
The fire, which was located in the trash room, was partially extinguished by the sprinkler system.
Firefighters from four units responded and quickly extinguished the blaze, according to the report. Personnel also used smoke ejectors to evacuate the smoke from the room.
Firefighters checked the adjacent apartments and found no signs of fire. No evacuations were required.
Dunedin Fire Marshal Bill McElligott determined the fire was accidental and probably caused by improper disposal of smoking materials.
Damage was estimated at $ 350.
Firefighters responded to another structure fire at 8:40 p.m. Sunday, July 5, at a duplex at 837 Lyndhurst St.
According to a report, firefighters found a moderate amount smoke emitting from the roof area of the unoccupied duplex apartment.
Firefighters from four units quickly brought the fire under control and used smoke ejectors to evacuate the smoke from the apartment.
Neighbors saw the black billowing smoke coming from the south duplex apartment roof area and called 911, the report said. Firefighters were able to isolate the fire to the attic area and there was no spread to the occupied unit next door.
The fire was isolated to the bathroom, bathroom ceiling and attic area of the structure. McElligott determined the fire was caused by a malfunctioning bathroom fan located in the ceiling. Damage was estimated at $3,500.
The Red Cross was contacted to provide housing for the apartment occupant. There were no injuries.
