DUNEDIN – An out of control vehicle injured a pedestrian and bicyclist about 3:12 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, in the parking lot of Causeway Plaza, at U.S. Alt. 19 and Curlew Road in Dunedin.
According to deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Major Accident Investigation Team, Robert Reed, 73, of Dunedin was driving his 2010 Audi northbound through the parking lot on the northwest corner of the plaza. For an unknown reason, the vehicle accelerated striking a concrete block wall in front of the Dunedin Family Fitness Center.
When Reed struck the wall, large chunks of the concrete wall broke apart and struck Jeanette Kelly, 63, of Dunedin who was walking into the gym. Reed then struck a bicyclist, Mark A. Imperato, 55. of Dunedin, who was crossing in the parking lot.
After striking the bicyclist, Reed continued northbound through the parking lot before striking a 2004 Nissan Armada driven by Robert R. Hupp, 65, of Dunedin. The vehicles came to rest after the final collision.
Reed was transported to Mease Dunedin Hospital for life threatening injuries. Imerato and Kelly were transported to Bayfront Medical Center and are in stable condition. Hupp was not injured.
Alcohol and drug impairment are not factors in the crash.
