DUNEDIN – A Pinellas County Sheriff’s cruiser was hit head-on by a vehicle heading in the wrong direction on Bayshore Boulevard Nov. 21.

According to a sheriff’s report, Deputy Jana Demperio, 42, was driving north at 1283 Bayshore Blvd. just south of Cedar Street when she was struck head-on by an Oldsmobile sedan driven by Marie Spirtos, 49, of Tarpon Springs. Both vehicles reportedly were traveling at a slow speed.

Demperio, who was on duty, was taken by another deputy to Mease Dunedin Hospital where she was treated and released, the report said. Spirtos was taken by ambulance to Mease Dunedin Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The report said that alcohol may be a factor in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
