LARGO – City Fire Chief Mike Wallace has reported the department responded to more than 20,000 calls last year.
Only 313 of those emergency calls were for fires, Wallace told the City Commission last week. Most of the calls, 15,907, were for rescues, highway crashes and emergency medical incidents, Wallace said.
The department also responded to 715 false alarms, 1,214 calls for assistance from neighboring departments and 250 responses to hazardous material spills.
Wallace said there were also more than 5,000 actions taken in non-emergency tasks. These included 617 smoke alarm checks and installations, 297 home safety inspections, 105 public safety demonstrations, 11 fire extinguisher programs (proper use) and 18 tours given of various fire stations.
