Higher drainage fees proposed

LARGO – Residents will find their monthly bill for stormwater drainage slightly higher beginning April 1 if the City Commission adopts a proposed increase scheduled for a vote at its Feb. 5 meeting.

City staff had proposed a 35 percent increase in its revenues last year but commissioners balked at that and sent staff back to the drawing table. City Finance Director Kim Adams explained that there has been no increase in these fees in six years.

The new proposal would increase rates 25 percent.

Residential bills would increase from $3.57 a month to $4.45 a month. The rates would not change for the next three years while generating $1.5 million in new revenue needed to maintain drainage ditches and pipes, buy a new street sweeper to increase the frequency of sweeping and improve treatment facilities for water going into Tampa Bay.
