LARGO – “Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge” is the motto of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, an international association of people committed to safe and enjoyable motorcycling. The local Clearwater-Largo chapter, the Suncoast Wings, celebrated its 25th anniversary Jan. 3 at the Minnreg Building.
In Florida there are about 5,300 members of GWRRA and the local chapter currently has about 105 members. At the celebration there were members from chapters throughout the state to enjoy a day of family fun, amusements and games, including a dinner and awards program.
The highlight of the day was an exhibition of course driving and keen motor-biking skills put on by the 2006 World Champion Central Florida Drill Team of Deland. This unique team of riders placed first in the worldwide competition last year in Nashville and demonstrated their riding skills in a narrow parking lot in front of the on-looking crowd.
“GWRRA is different from most motorcycle clubs,” said Bob Shrader, senior Florida district director. “We emphasize safety on the road, and encourage continual education to our members. We do not endorse speeding, alcohol, reckless driving and hot dogging.”
