LARGO – Mary Gray Black and Andrew Guyette won the election Tuesday in Largo for Seats 1 and 2 for three-year terms, according to results posted by the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections.
Black, a former commissioner, won Seat 1, formerly held by Pat Burke, who decided against another term, with 1,277 votes or 47.7 percent of the vote. Black faced Gigi Arntzen and Joshua Lindsey. Arntzen got 1,058 votes or 39.5 percent of the vote while Lindsey had 344 votes or 12.8 percent.
Guyette, who faced Rodney Woods for Seat 2, obtained 1,658 votes or 64 percent of the vote, while Woods got 932 votes or 36 percent of the votes. Guyette and Woods originally were to campaign against former Commissioner Charlie Harper, but Harper dropped out of the race citing health concerns.
Black and Guyette will each make an annual salary of $12,135.
Voters also were asked whether they wanted to give newly annexed residents a shot at local office without a waiting period, and if they wanted an internal auditor to report directly to the City Commission.
The first referendum question, concerning, among other things, giving new residents the right to run for office, was approved by 1,871 voters or 73 percent. Voters were also asked to require other commissioners, besides the mayor, to report to the commission possible violations on the part of other city officials.
The second question, concerning the auditor, was narrowly rejected with 1,334 votes, or 51 percent of the tally; 1,271 voters, or 48 percent of the ballots, voted to approve it.
About 2,600 residents or 6 percent of 44,517 registered voters voted in the election.
