LARGO – The Largo Fire Rescue selection committee was unanimous in their decision to name Firefighter/Paramedic Andrew Dixon as the 2013 Firefighter of the Year.
Dixon started his career with Largo in 2002. During his tenure, he has volunteered to take over the management and oversight of the Explorer Post. He has attained two associate degrees and has been certified as a state of Florida Fire Officer 1 and 2 and Fire Instructor 1 and 2.
He was recently recognized by a local father who wrote to the department to describe the impact Dixon has had on his child’s life through the Explorer program. The father described a troubled teenager who Dixon took the time to regularly meet with, outside of the regularly scheduled Explorer meetings. Through his mentorship, Dixon encouraged him to improve, not only his grades, but also his relationship with his family.
Dixon also is a member of the department SWAT team as well as the Pinellas County Technical Rescue team. He is currently working on a bachelor’s degree. He is married and has a 1-year-old son.
