City gets wind insurance
LARGO – Last year the city’s insurance company proposed an increased premium of nearly 400 percent, so it was decided the city would insure itself against hurricane and tornado winds.

Now, according to the city staff, the city can obtain wind damage coverage for a year for just $600,000, compared to $2 million it would have cost last year. This is attributed to no hurricanes hitting Florida for two years.

The City Commission approved purchase of the wind insurance during its March 4 meeting.

Commissioners ok citizens use of document camera
LARGO – A video camera used by city staff to display graphics and documents during City Commission meetings will be made available to anyone addressing the commission.

Commissioners agreed that since the public had paid for this equipment through tax dollars, it should be available for public use. There was some confusion, however, as to how its use could be censored.

City Attorney Alan Zimmet cautioned that one proposal for citizens to submit documents to the city clerk before a meeting might be impossible to implement. He added that the mayor is responsible for allowing citizens to speak and to limit their comments. He said the mayor should also review printed materials.

Library staff find big savings in library cards
LARGO – The city’s public library can save up to $7,000 next year by using county issued cards for new borrowers instead of those printed by the city, according to City Manager Norton “Mac” Craig.

The suggestion arose during a recent library staff budget meeting, Craig told the city commission. Craig said those with the city cards don’t need new ones and they will remain good for borrowing books at any county-affiliated library. Only those applying for new cards will be affected, he said, and they will be issued a county identification card instead of the blue city card.
