Federal money boosts patrols
LARGO – An $18,000 federal grant will provide for additional police presence along Clearwater-Largo Road according to police Chief Lester Aradi.

Aradi said that with the grant he can add patrols in that area, in cars and on bikes and on-foot, in addition to officers already working the area.

Fire damage fell dramaticallyFire Chief Jeff Bullock reported last week that fires in Largo dropped significantly in 2006, some 40 percent compared to the year before. According to Bullock’s report to the city commission, structure fires caused $813,000 in estimated damage during 2006, compared to the annual average of $1.3 million. Fires were contained to the room in which they started in 86 percent of the city’s fire department’s responses. Bullock said alerts for “working fires” in which a structure is engulfed, dropped by 45.9 percent to just 22 percent.

Bins for recycling paper placed in recycling centers
New, blue bins for mixed kinds of paper have been set up in Largo’s two recycling centers, according to Acting City Manager Norton “Mac” Craig. The bins are for items such as junk mail, windowed envelopes, shredded paper, magazines, catalogs, telephone books, soft-cover books, food boxes and paper bags – any paper that could be torn by hand. The recycling centers are at 1551 Starkey Road and on U.S. 19 North at East Bay Drive. Craig asked that questions be directed to Brenna Barrett at 586-7424.
