Students at St. Paul’s School work on a pond planting project.
LARGO – A pond planting project at Saint Paul’s School, which received a grant from the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, will rehabilitate the storm water pond between the school’s new lower school building and Allen’s Creek.

The purpose of the grant is to educate students about storm water ponds, provide habitat and food for animals using the pond and to better filter the water in the pond before it reaches Allen’s Creek, said marine science teacher Hope Kennedy in a news release.

Students in grades 5 to 8 will be assigned a coordinate and will use a square quadrant as a guide for a long term research project. They will collect information on the water depth, temperature, salinity, and pH. They will measure the plant and identify the species by scientific name. Students also will take a sample of bottom sediment and analyze it for macro invertebrates.
