2008 SummerFest promotes quality music and community awareness while raising funds for RCS.
LARGO – This year’s SummerFest introduced a parade of performers to crowds at Largo Central Park while raising awareness as well as funds to address hunger, homelessness and domestic violence in the community.

Religious Community Services, a nonprofit organization, sponsored the annual event, splitting up the entertainment into two programs: Saturday’s lineup featured Latin performers while blues artists took the stage on Sunday.

Artists including Danny Lozada, Lannie Battistini and Daniel B. Marshall participated in the festival. Local artists who got a shot at entertaining guests included Cece Revaya, Brass Knuckle Incident, Raising the Bar, and Bayside Church Jazz Band.

Saturday’s headliner was Tito Puente Jr. On Sunday, the last act to rouse the crowd was New Orleans’ sons the Neville Brothers.

RCS is made up of four distinct yet interwoven programs working together to provide basic needs to Pinellas residents. The RCS Food Bank is the largest distributor of food to those in need in the county, serving between 4,000 and 5,000 individuals each month. The RCS Grace House provides temporary shelter to homeless families. The Haven of RCS helps victims of domestic violence become survivors by providing shelter, legal advocacy and support. The RCS Thrift Store helps raise revenue for RCS through sales to the public and also offers shopping at no charge to participants in RCS programs.

Organizers encouraged attendees to bring food donations. RCS reports a 50 percent increase in people turning to the organization because of hunger.
