LARGO – The year was 1989 at Largo High School.
“The hair was sky high, permed to the max or styled out in mullets. The clothes were bold and bright and the jeans were pegged. The music ranged from Run DMC and the B52s to Depeche Mode and Van Halen,” said a press release from several classmates.
The class of 1989 packed up a bottle of Coca-Cola Classic, a Swatch Watch, U2’s The Joshua Tree CD and dozens of other items into a time capsule.
Several members of LHS’ class of 1989, with the help of some large machinery, unearthed the time capsule that they buried under the north end zone scoreboard at Largo High.
Unfortunately, the capsule’s seal broke and water seeped inside. Class members are trying to preserve what they can. They had planned on displalying the items at the reunion.
The activity kicked off the reunion activities for Largo High’s class of 1989, featuring a huge party weekend at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort on Clearwater Beach Aug. 7-9.
On Friday, Aug. 7, students will gather at the Sheraton’s pool bar. On Saturday, Aug. 8, the alumni “will test their physical capabilities” on the sand volleyball courts at the Sheraton Sand Key or on the links at a local golf course.
The main event will be Saturday night, Aug. 8, at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort’s ballroom.
“The class of 1989 will trip back in time with the help of fellow 1989 LHS graduate, Ryan Nolan, an event producer, to their carefree High School days. The reunion will have a Hollywood vibe with an ’80’s twist featuring an ’80’s TV wall, retro video games and a game show wheel,” the news release on the reunion said.
Kristin Colson looks forward to her 20th reunion, saying she will probably spend a week in the area.
A stay-at-home mother in Charlotte, N.C., Colson was secretary of the class of 1989, which, she estimated, had 460 seniors.
In a telephone conversation, Colson that she had fond memories and looks forward to seeing her classmates again – many of whom she had lost contact with after graduation.
“We really had a fun class,” she said, “and a wide mix of people. At the end of the day, everybody were great friends.”
