City public works department is accredited by APWA

LARGO – The city’s Department of Public Works recently became the 50th agency accredited by the American Public Works Association in the United States and Canada.
Representatives of APWA recognized the achievements of the public works unit when they formally presented the City Commission with this prestigious recognition.
The city agency is only the fourth Florida city to achieve the honor.
Evaluated in 260 separate management and operational practices, the department was judged fully compliant with 242 of these, and substantially compliant with the other 18.
In addition to receiving accreditation, the department’s 2008-2010 Strategic Plan was recognized by the Accreditation Site Visit Team as a model practice. Model practices are those exceeding the benchmark previously established and sets a new level of best management practice for peers to attempt to meet.
“As Director of Public Works I am proud that an internationally recognized organization has evaluated our practices and policies and determined that we meet or exceed these established Best Management Practices,” said Brian Usher, public works director.
“It is always gratifying when your own views of your organization’s progress are validated by the review of others,” he said. “We understand that this is just the first step in a continuing process of improvement to better serve our community.”
The American Public Works Association is an international educational and professional group of public agencies, private companies and individuals dedicated to providing high quality public works goods and services. The organization provides a forum in which public works professionals can exchange ideas, improve professional competency, increase the performance of their agencies, and companies, and bring important public works-related topics to public attention in local, state and federal arenas.
