LARGO – The SPCA Tampa Bay last week assisted in a dog breeder surrender in the Suwanee County town of Live Oak, just east of Tallahassee.
The SPCA shelter in Largo took in half of the dogs that were surrendered by the breeder.
They included Australian Shepherds, Mini Australian Shepherds, Border Collies and Pomeranians.
Most of the dogs are adults, though there are a few younger dogs, and while they appear to be in good physical condition, they are undergoing evaluation at the SPCA.
The dogs have spent most of their lives in cages, so they will need a lot of tender loving care, first at the SPCA and in SPCA foster homes.
“They’re going to need socialization and patient owners,” said Marissa Segundo, public relations manager for the SPCA Tampa Bay.
As with the recent confiscation from a Tennessee puppy mill, the SPCA is careful to make sure that new owners are aware of what they are getting into with rescued breeder animals. Recently, 200 people lined up outside the SPCA when 30 of the Tennessee purebred dogs were made available for adoption.
“We want to make sure they go to good homes,” Segundo said. “Sometimes it takes time, but our main concern is for these animals.”
Updates on adoption information will be posted at www.spcatampabay.org.
