LARGO – A Clearwater man suffered non-life threatening injuries when about 10 sheets of quartz fell on him at his place of employment just after noon Sept. 9.
Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Pelican International, 6140 Ulmerton Road in Largo, where they found Sergio Alvarez, 45, trapped between the sheets of quartz and another pallet.
According to deputies, Alvarez was unloading several pallets of quartz being delivered to Pelican International. The pallets were up on their side. As he released one of the pallets to unload it, the supports broke.
Deputies said the approximately 10 sheets of quartz contained in the pallet fell on him and pinned him between the sheets and another pallet. Deputies said that each sheet weighs approximately 1,000 pounds for a total of 10,000 pounds.
Firefighters from various agencies responded to extricate the man. The process took about 30 to 45 minutes. Alvarez was subsequently transported by air to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Deputies initially responded to assist with the landing zone for the helicopter and are investigating the incident. At this time, deputies said it appears to be accidental in nature.
