LARGO – A medical emergency may have been a factor in a three-vehicle fatality crash early Monday morning on Whitney Road in Largo.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened about 7:30 a.m. on Whitney Road west of 62nd Street.
Brower B. Yeger Jr., 81, of Clearwater was traveling westbound on Whitney Road, just east of 62nd Street when he crossed the lane divider in front of Patricia Smith Derringer, 55, of Clearwater, who was traveling eastbound on Whitney Road just west of 62nd Street.
Derringer attempted to stop, but was unable to avoid colliding head-on with Yeger. Derringer’s Dodge van was then forced backward and crashed into the front of a Toyota Solara driven by John Semancik, 69, of Port Richie.
Yeger was transported to Largo Medical Center where he later died. Derringer suffered minor injuries. Semancik was not injured.
The FHP said Yeger may have suffered a medical emergency that caused him to lose control of his vehicle. The investigation continues.
