Candlelight vigil LARGO – The Narcotic Overdose Prevention and Education Task Force will hold its National Candlelight Vigil at Largo Central Park, Thursday, Oct. 29, 6:30 p.m.
The event is dedicated to the memory of those lost and suffering from addiction problems.
The local organizer of the vigil is Laurie Serra, Pinellas Candlelight Vigil coordinator.
Serra lost her son, Matthew, on Oct. 3 from a prescription drug overdose in Largo. Matthew was a graduate of Seminole High School and the Virginia Military Institute.
“Our family will never be the same. As we continue to grieve for our son, we also have come to fully recognize the magnitude of the drug and alcohol addition epidemic in Pinellas,” she was quoted as saying in a news release. “It seems that every day we receive another phone call from a family whose parent, child, brother, or sister is battling or has too often lost their battle with drug and alcohol abuse.”
Shop With a Cop & Fireman LARGO – This year police have partnered up with Charity Works to raise funds for our annual Shop With a Cop and Fireman. Charity Works is conducting a “Ball Drop” from a Helicopter on Nov. 19 as part of its Charity Golf Outing. All proceeds go to helping efforts to bring holiday joy to children in need. The event features an opportunity to win a vacation home (timeshare/ownership) in Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort. A $10 per ticket buys you a numbered golf ball. Closest ball to the hole wins the Lake Tahoe vacation home. The winner does not need to be present. Tickets are being sold in Police Chief Lester Aradi’s office.
Hydrocephalus walk LARGO – The fifth annual Hydrocephalus Walk is Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m., at Largo Central Park, 101 Central Park Drive. Finish line festivities and lunch served after the event. Register online before Oct. 31 at www.gothydro.org. Proceeds from the event support the Hydrocephalus Association, a nonprofit organization that provides support, education and advocacy to individuals, families and medical professionals dealing with hydrocephaluus. Largo Woman’s Club meeting LARGO – The Largo Woman’s Club will hold its regular business meeting luncheon Tuesday, Nov. 3, in the Loft at Royal Palms, 200 Lake Ave. The guest speaker will be David Michalicka of the Crime Prevention Task Force, who will talk about home and auto safety, personal identity theft, and burglar theft. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the cost of the luncheon is $7 a person. Call Mary Black at 585-2852.
Largo Community Center’s Celebrity Showcase LARGO – Dynamic vocals, musical hits, comedy will be featured at this season’s Celebrity Showcase at the Largo Community Center, 65 Fourth St. N.W. All adults and seniors are invited to come out and enjoy a series of matinee shows performed by nationally ranked professional artists.
This season’s Celebrity Showcase lineup includes: Dec. 3, The Sweethearts of Branson; Jan. 28, “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” with special guests Dame Edna and former President George W. Bush; Feb. 25, The World Famous Platters; and March 25, The McGuire Sisters, 42nd Street Big Band and world famous singing star, Don Cherry.

Holiday craft fair LARGO – A holiday craft fair is set for Saturday, Nov. 7, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Bay Ranch Mobile Home Village clubhouse, 7349 Ulmerton Road. Admission is free. Breakfast and lunch are available.
Democratic Women’s Club meeting LARGO – The Democratic Women’s Club will host a meeting Monday, Oct. 26, at Stacey’s Buffet, 1451 Missouri Ave. N. Social hour and lunch starts at 11:30 a.m., and a presentation by Shahra Anderson, regional director for U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D), at 12:15 p.m. followed by a short business meeting. Four soap stars LARGO – Four daytime soap stars will attend an event to benefit and support a charitable organization. The stars will appear at the AHEPA Lodge Home, 1156 Jasper St. W., Saturday, Nov. 7, 2 to 5 p.m.
The stars are Walt Willey, who plays Jackson Montgomery in “All My Children”; Vincent Irizarry, who plays Dr. David Hayward in “All My Children”; Forbes March, who plays Mason Jarvis in “As the World Turns”; and Bobbie Eakes, who plays Crystal Hayward in “All My Children.”
The cost is $75 a person by Nov. 1, nonrefundable. All prices include a light lunch and a meet-and-greet session with the stars.
A private seating with the stars, starting at noon, costs $150 a person. Proceeds benefit Our Military Kids. Cash bar and raffle is available.
Our Military Kids provides support to the children of deployed and severely injured National Guard and Military Reserve personnel through grants for sports, fine arts and tutoring that nurture and sustain the children during the time a parent is away in the service.

Science of Mind LARGO – Two eight-week accredited classes in the Science of Mind series will be offered at the Center for Conscious Living, 6152 126th Ave., Suite 501.
The first class, The Nature of Effective Prayer, is designed to give the student a thorough understanding of affirmative prayer. It incorporates exercises that develop a student’s understanding of how to pray effectively. This series of eight classes will be on Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., beginning Oct. 27.
Spiritual Economics will teach the tools to turn off the bad news and tune in to the good, with a Science of Mind classes aimed at prosperity and abundance. It will show how the power supports and sustains an individual no matter what appears to be going on in the world. This eight-class series will meet on Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 28.

Salvation Army seeks vendors The Salvation Army is seeking individuals and groups interested in selling used household items or baked goods at its Holiday Market Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Salvation Army is at 3800 Ninth Ave. N., in St. Petersburg. Spaces are available and include a 12-by-12-foot space and two chairs. No tables are provided. Prices are $20 for an outdoor space and $25 for an air-conditioned indoor space.
