LARGO – Explorer Ryan Melander was awarded a $2,000 scholarship from Largo Fire Rescue Explorer Post No. 941 in October.
Melander, 18, has been an explorer since 2008. He has volunteered almost 1,000 hours in the community. The 2012 Seminole High School graduate is an Explorer captain. In June, he earned certification as an emergency medical technician from the Florida Medical Training Institute. In September, he recently returned from state and national certification training as a firefighter.
“The scholarship is awarded every year to young men that are dedicated to the fire Explorers,” said District Chief Kevin Brennen.
Ryan is the son of Darryl and Carol Melander of Seminole. Darryl Melander recently retired from Seminole Fire Rescue, Brennen explained.
“And now Ryan wants to be a firefighter,” he said.
The scholarship helps fund the pursuit of an education leading to a career in fire service.
