LARGO - Two caregivers have been arrested on first-degree murder warrants in connection with the death of a 4-year-old in August.
Investigators from the Largo Police Department were called to Northside Hospital Aug. 16 by the Pinellas County Sheriff¹s Office in reference to a child death investigation. The dead child had been brought to the emergency room by two caregivers, later identified as Sylvester David Carew, 54, and Nikki Tyler Gardner-Bradley, 38.
The hospital staff initially called Sheriff's Office investigators, who arrived and determined that the incident occurred in Largo's jurisdiction, Largo police reports said.
The case was then referred to the Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office. On Oct. 22 the Medical Examiner¹s Office ruled the death of the child as a homicide.
Largo Police Department Detective Lara Young presented the case to the Pasco-Pinellas State Attorney's Office and first-degree murder warrants were issued for the arrest of the two suspects.
Information was developed that the suspects had left Pinellas County to an unknown location. Largo police requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshal's Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force in locating and apprehending the suspects.
The task force located the suspects in Hillsborough County on Nov. 24 and took both into custody for the Pinellas County warrants.
Both suspects are currently in custody at the Orient Road Jail in Tampa.
