PALM HARBOR – A Palm Harbor man died June 17 when a branch from a falling tree impaled him.
Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies said the death appears to be accidental. Deputies responded to the home on Leprechaun Lane about 3:15 p.m.
According to the sheriff’s report, Dan Paul Butts, 63, and his girlfriend, Beverly Drew, 50, were clearing trees from their backyard. Butts cut a tree with a chainsaw, and Drew was in the couple’s Ford SUV pulling the tree, using a rope tied on the tree to the vehicle.
Drew heard a scream and saw that the tree had fallen on butts and a branch had impaled him. She called 911 and attempted CPR. EMS responded. Butts was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene to take custody of the body.
