PALM HARBOR – A Seffner man died from injuries suffered Oct. 7 when he lost control of his motorcycle about 11:13 p.m. and crashed into a curb on Belcher Road just south of Grovewood Boulevard in Palm Harbor.
According to Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies, Daniel Lavoy Akins, 27, was observed operating his motorcycle at a high rate of speed and weaving through traffic in Oldsmar, heading westbound to U.S. 19. The motorcycle fled from a patrol deputy who had attempted to stop him for speeding. The deputy did not pursue the motorcycle. The motorcycle was last seen traveling northbound on Belcher Road from the area of Nebraska Avenue at a high rate of speed.
Sheriff’s Major Accident investigators say that after passing Alderman Road, Akins apparently failed to negotiate a curve in the road and crashed. Akins was ejected from the motorcycle. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center where he died just after midnight Oct. 8.
The investigation continues. Investigators say the crash may be alcohol related. An autopsy including toxicology tests is scheduled.
