PINELLAS PARK - Pinellas Park Police officers and volunteers are out on a spill of several gallons of paint at Park Boulevard and U.S. 19 N.
All northbound lanes of US 19 are closed while units attempt to wash down the spill. Traffic is heavy and delays are to be expected.
Pinellas Park Fire Department and Florida Department of Transportation also are on scene.
Police report that the spill occurred as a vehicle turned onto U.S. 19, spilling the water-soluble, silicone-based paint. The spill is larger than originally reported.
Crews will put down sand to contain the spill before attempting to wash the roadway. Northbound U.S. 19 remains closed until further notice as cleanup efforts continue.
Alternate routes are 49th and 66th streets.
At 4:30 p.m., Pinellas Park police updated the situation. Latest information is that the spill was from 25 five-gallon paint buckets, about 125 gallons total. Cleanup is still underway and the state Department of Environmental Protection is now on scene.
