Police concerned over valve thefts
PINELLAS PARK – Police are looking for the thieves who have been stealing FDC valves from water standpipes, thus putting the lives of citizens in danger.

Detective J. Puglia said about 378 standpipes currently exist in the city. An inspection is now being conducted to determine just how many of them have been stolen. The valves are used to connect fire hoses during emergencies. The heavy valves are made of solid brass. Puglia said the loss of the valves can prevent firefighters from using water. The standpipes have been damaged in some cases while the valves were removed by the thieves. Puglia said workers are welding the valves to the pipes to prevent further theft. Local metal recyclers have been alerted to watch out for the missing valves. Call Puglia at 541-0883 with information regarding the thefts.
