Pinellas Park launched a new citywide app in March. It’s available for both android and Apple devices.
PINELLAS PARK – In an effort to reach younger residents, the city of Pinellas Park has launched a new app offering a variety of information about the city.
“For the new generation, it’s everything,” said Lana Beck, the city’s government relations administrator. “If they can’t get it on their phone, then they might not get it at all or they might not care about it. The goal is to engage our younger population.”
Available for both android and Apple devices through Google Play and the Apple App Store, respectively, the app is “a one-stop guide to the city of Pinellas Park,” Beck said. In addition to access to city services, residents who have downloaded the app also can purchase tickets to upcoming events, learn about the city’s history, view the city’s television programming, tour several areas of the city and access a local business directory.
Currently, there are three tours available through the app. Tours include the arts village, city parks and city buildings. Beck said more tours will be added in the future, including a tour highlighting city equestrian trails.
“There are some different tours we’re considering,” she said.
The city began building the app at the end of 2016, a few weeks before Christmas, Beck said.
The app went live at the beginning of March, just a few weeks ahead of Country in the Park, which was held March 18. The city used that event to heavily promote the new app, Beck said.
“So we wanted to have a fair amount of information on the app by then,” she said.
To date, she estimates around 1,000 residents have downloaded the app.
There’s more work to be done, she said.
“Obviously, it is going to be fluid. We’re going to add more photos and information,” she said. “Because if everything is completely static all the time, then people won’t come back to find out what’s new and we want people to keep accessing the app.”
The city’s next push will be to activate local businesses and encourage them to add information to their pages in the business directory on the app. This service is free of charge for business owners, Beck said. They’ll be able to upload everything from photos and contact information to coupons and event details.
“Anything they want to upload about themselves,” she said.
