Homeless unit calls for aid from churches
Article published on Friday, April 13, 2007 |
PINELLAS PARK – The head of the city’s major homeless mission has called upon churches to open their doors to the growing homeless population.
The Rev. Lionel Cabral, executive director of the Suncoast Haven of Rest Rescue Mission at 5625 Park Blvd., said there are over 600 churches in Pinellas County that can provide temporary shelters to homeless men, women and children.
Cabral cited Northwest Presbyterian Church of St. Petersburg that allowed street people to use their facilities during the month of March. He called upon other churches to open their doors in future months, or even weeks and weekends whenever possible.
“You don’t have to open your doors every night, and you don’t have to serve food,” Cabral said.
The minister said churches can provide temporary stable and quiet environments for street people by providing safe sleeping quarters. He noted that his own mission recently launched the Pinellas County Bag Lunch Program that in March distributed 1,768 bag lunches.
He said volunteers from Praise Cathedral Renewal Center, Park Place Wesleyan Church, both in Pinellas Park, and Clearview Baptist Church of St. Petersburg are helping to prepare and distribute the bag lunches to street people.
Persons interested in volunteering their time to pack and distribute the meals should call the mission at 545-8282.
