PINELLAS PARK – Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office announced on April 28 that human remains found during the investigation of an explosion at a Pinellas Park business had been identified as Roy William Hubert, 53.
Hubert was the owner of Rapid Roy’s Small Engine Repair Shop located at 6798 Park Boulevard in Pinellas Park where an explosion occurred just before midnight on Saturday, April 26. A private residence also was destroyed by fire caused by the explosion.
According to detectives assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit, the remains have been positively identified as Hubert’s. Due to the condition of the body a positive identification was made through dental and medical records. Detectives say Hubert’s next-of-kin have been notified of his death.
Arson detectives and investigators from the State Fire Marshal Office continue their investigation into the cause of the blast; however they say it was consistent with a gasoline vapor explosion. The blast leveled the block and wood structure at the scene and spread flying debris up to a quarter mile from the scene causing damage to awnings and breaking windows at other businesses. A subsequent fire also destroyed an adjacent residence located at 7373 68th St. N.
The investigation continues.
