Chamber warns of phone scammers
Article published on Thursday, May 1, 2008
PINELLAS PARK – City businesses are being warned about telephone calls from people who claim to be representing a map company, citing an arrangement with the Pinellas Park/Gateway Chamber of Commerce and selling advertisements at discount rates.

Unfortunately, the chamber said, its a scam that currently is working its way along the East Coast of the United States.

Julie Roberts, a chamber spokesperson, warned merchants to stay away from callers claiming to represent a map company.

“Should this chamber engage in another business arrangement with a map company, we would notify the membership,” Roberts said.

Roberts said the company is using the names “Hometown Publications,” “Hometown Productions,” “Universal Mapping” and “World Business Directory Publications.”

The business practice should not be mistaken for the chamber’s efforts to sell advertising for its new business directory, set for publication in early summer. Also, this “chamber map scam” should not discredit the professional relationship the chamber has with The Map Group Inc., located in Fort Wright, Ky.

Call Roberts at 209-0836.
