City’s scholarship program extends deadline to May 30
Article published on Thursday, May 8, 2008
PINELLAS PARK – The Public Service Education Foundation of Pinellas Park has extended the application deadline for the current scholarship period to May 30.

Applications may be obtained at area high school guidance counselor offices; the Pinellas Park Public Library, 7770 52nd St.; City Hall, 5141 78th Ave.; Park Station, 5851 Park Blvd., or at city recreation centers.

Since its inception in 2002, the Public Service Education Foundation of Pinellas Park has awarded more than $64,000 in scholarship grants to area high school students to continue their education with an eye toward entering careers in public service.

Scholarships may be applied to college courses or other recognized professional training leading to employment in city, county, state or federal government positions. Police and Fire Academy, Public Works Academy, and trade school classes as well as academic studies at colleges or universities may be funded by the scholarship program.

The Foundation is funded through voluntary contributions from City of Pinellas Park employees and community organizations.

In 2005 an additional $1,000 grant was established through the generosity of the Korean War Veterans Suncoast Chapter No. 14 Memorial Scholarship Fund. The reason for the scholarship is twofold according to KWVA Chapter 14 members.

“We want to encourage the study of the Korean War, its causes and the effect of its outcome on the world,” said chapter past-president, Clarence Dadswell. “We want to give back to the community that has been our chapter’s home, and recognize their love and support for our members and the memories of all who served our country in the Korean War.”

KWVA members saw the scholarship as a great way to accomplish those goals and to compliment the lasting tribute created by the completion of the Korean War Veteran’s Memorial at Freedom Lake Park.

The KWVA scholarship is open to any graduating senior involved in ROTC programs in Pinellas County.

Qualifying students may apply for both public-service and Korean War Veterans Memorial scholarships.
