PINELLAS PARK – Bill Ackerly, a fourth generation Floridian and former owner of a Largo eatery, has gone Cajun with the opening of the Canal Street Cafe here.
The menu offers Louisiana-inspired dishes with French bread sandwiches, chicken gumbo and jambalaya along with local favorites such as flan and orange salad.
Ackerly grew up in Tampa Bay, but discovered New Orleans cooking after a chef friend introduced him to the full flavored foods of southern Louisiana, without the scorching fire from mega doses of hot spices. He began to develop his own interpretation of low country dishes which accented full bodied flavor without overwhelming hot spices.
Ackerly calls his casual menu Louisiana Inspired Fusion. A Floridian mix and match menu, it features the best of both worlds. Red beans and rice, Crawfish etoufee, Muffuletta dressing and Key Lime pie.
Canal Street Cafe is located in the newly-remodeled Buccaneer Plaza Shopping Center at 6661 49th St. Stepping into Canal Street Cafe gives the feel of ducking into a side street courtyard for a quick lunch with a little blues and jazz atmosphere. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and is closed Sunday.
