PINELLAS PARK – Several thousand city residents on May 5 and 6 attended the 2006 American Cancer Society Relay for Life event at the England Brothers Band Shell.

Honored were about 100 cancer survivors who, along with others, marched around the band shell’s track to the tune of live 1950s rock ’n’ roll music.

Some participants wore T-shirts and badges naming loved ones who are suffering from or have died of the dreaded disease.

Paper bags, weighed down with sand and illuminated with candles, were strategically placed around the track to honor loved ones who became cancer victims.

The Saturday event began with a midnight stroll followed by a scavenger hunt, games and other activities.
