Tighter measure for light industrial zoning is tabled
Article published on Friday, July 6, 2007
PINELLAS PARK – The City Council on June 28 tabled until next month an ordinance that provides for stricter standards for development or redevelopment of light industrial areas.

The measure tightens rules for light industrial land that abuts residential properties. It was endorsed by the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The ordinance will go before the council on Aug. 23.

There have been several controversies in recent months involving residential property owners concerned over proposed business use of industrial lands. In one, a company that produces granite countertops was confronted by angry residents who complained about the potential of noise and environmental pollution.

That project reportedly has since been shelved with the owners looking elsewhere, despite winning a recent lawsuit that challenged the city council’s rejection of the project.

The council also approved an ordinance on second and final hearing that rezones property at 12900 34th St. from heavy industrial to heavy industrial with the Industrial Planned Unit Development overlay. The 3-lot tract on 4.74 acres of land will be used for unspecified future development.

A third measure calls for the rezoning of property at the southwest corner of 53rd Street and 76th Avenue. It changed an R-6 multi-family residential/commercial district to a B-1 general commercial district. The half-acre tract will be used to build contractor’s offices. No fabrication or storage is allowed on the site.

In other matters, the council approved the application of a $27,555 federal grant for the purchase and installation of new audio and visual equipment in the police administration building’s training rooms.

The money for the equipmentcomes from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grant.

Approved also was a $54,342 expenditure to replace a manhole and approximately 60 feet of sewer piping in the 8800 block of 55th Way.

The emergency work will be accomplished by R.E. Beckner Construction of Floral City, the lowest bidder.

The council also approved annexations for property at 6003 105th Terrace, and at 10910 58th St.

The council also approved the reappointments of Carol Bates, Louis Bommattei and Ray Hoeneisen to the Community Projects Advisory Board.
