Pinellas Park police and fire personnel work the scene of a two-vehicle crash Thursday, July 24, in the 6000 block of Park Street. Both vehicles ended up on their tops.
PINELLAS PARK – Westbound Park Street was closed at 60th Street just before 5 p.m. Thursday, July 24, as Pinellas Park police worked the scene involving two overturned vehicles.
According to the police report, a 2011 Nissan truck, driven by Kenton Sams, 70, of Treasure Island and a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Shawn Barnes, 35, of Madeira Beach were traveling west in the 6000 block of Park Boulevard. The truck was in the center lane and the Jetta was in the median lane.
Due to roadway construction the pavement on in the median lane had been removed which created a 1-inch lip between the median and center lanes.
When the Jetta changed lanes from the median to the center, the front right tire failed and resulted in a blowout. The car traveled 218 feet and went from the median lane to the sidewalk on the north side of Park Boulevard. The car then traveled 255 feet on the sidewalk with the right half of the car on the sidewalk and the left half of the car in the curb lane of Park Boulevard.
While on the sidewalk, the Jetta struck a PSTA bus stop sign breaking the pole at the base. When the car reached the driveway of 6035 Park Boulevard, it swerved left into the curb lane and the left half of the vehicle went into the center lane. At that time, the front of the Jetta struck the right rear of the Nissan truck.
The truck veered left and fishtailed, bringing the back of the vehicle to the median lane. The truck was sideways with the driver’s side door facing west. It rolled onto the driver’s side and then onto its roof continuing to spin; the vehicle was traveling west. Then truck left the roadway and went into the grass area of 6051 Park Boulevard where it hit a fixed sign.
Police said after the Jetta hit the rear of the truck, the right front rim dug into the roadway and the Jetta rolled onto its passenger side and then rolled onto the roof. The vehicle came to a stop in the curb lane of Park Boulevard.
Injuries were reported, but were “minimal,” according to the report. Investigators believe that seat belts and airbags prevented more serious injuries.
Barnes was issued a citation for careless driving. Independent witnesses told investigators that the vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed just before the crash.
