PINELLAS PARK – The city now has its own free weekly newspaper. The first edition of the Pinellas Park Beacon, published by Tampa Bay Newspapers, was delivered today - Friday, Aug. 5 - in print and online.
Publisher Dan Autrey said the community newspaper will have a circulation of about 22,000.
“We are excited to have an opportunity to become part of the community. Pinellas Park has strong leadership and an intense level of civic pride – essentials needed for the success of a weekly newspaper,” Autrey said.
Tampa Bay Newspapers publishes the Seminole Beacon, Beach Beacon, Belleair Bee, Largo Leader, Clearwater Citizen and Entertainment Extra. The newspaper group has been planning to launch a newspaper for months. The total circulation of all publications is about 122,000.
The newspaper will include news about local government, businesses, schools, community events, sports club listings, crime, weddings and other activities in Pinellas Park, which has a population of about 47,000. The format will be similar to the company’s other papers.
“I’m extremely enthusiastic about having our own hometown newspaper,” said Pinellas Park Mayor Bill Mischler. “It’s overdue.”
Tampa Bay Newspapers, the mayor said, has much experience publishing other papers, and he is glad the company is taking the step to start a newspaper in the community.
“We haven’t had a well-circulated hometown paper delivered in the city of Pinellas Park for 10 to 15 years,” Mischler said.
Pinellas Park has grown rapidly in the past 20 years, said Edward Corrao, office manager of the Pinellas Park/Mid-County Chamber of Commerce.
“For a long time, I think this type of newspaper has been needed,” he said.
Tampa Bay Newspapers’ office is at 9911 Seminole Blvd., Seminole. The company has served the communities of Central Pinellas County for more than 29 years.
