Elderly woman doesn’t realize grandson is dead
PINELLAS PARK – An elderly woman thought her grandson was sleeping and apparently continued to feed him even though he had been dead for about a week.

Police said John M. Mudd, 32, of the 9800 block of Mainlands Boulevard, a local real estate salesman, died of natural causes. An autopsy was scheduled for this week.

Mudd is the son of Jerry Mudd, the late city manager who in February 2003 committed suicide.

The grandmother and her grandson lived together. She was taken into medical custody by the Department of Children and Families.

Mudd’s badly decomposed body was discovered on a living room couch.

Officer Scott Mitchell said Mudd died sometime between July 17 and 26. Police were called by Mudd’s co-workers on July 26 who reported that he had not been at work for several days.

Police said when officers arrived at the front door the woman answered and said her grandson was sleeping on the couch. Officers said a strong odor was coming from within the house. The smell was so bad that it could be detected outside the building.

Police said Firefighter Paramedic D. Twardowski determined that Mudd had been dead for about seven days or more due to the advanced decomposition.

K-9 dog credited with saving suicidal woman
PINELLAS PARK – A police K-9 dog named Rocky was credited on July 27 with finding a woman under a dumpster after she slit her wrists in an aborted suicide attempt. Officer C. Perry said he and his canine partner responded to the 9500 block of Park Lake Drive at about 9:15 p.m. to investigate a report of a woman who cut her wrists. Police said the female victim fled the scene by the time police arrived. Numerous bloodstains and several knives were discovered by officers. Perry sent the K-9 to follow the bloodstains and the victim was discovered laying face up under a large construction dumpster. The victim was treated at a local hospital.
