PINELLAS PARK – A Pinellas Park man was arrested Aug. 28 and charged with one count of aggravated child abuse against a 6-month-old female.
According to a report from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred Aug. 15 at a private residence in St. Petersburg.
Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit said Derek Lee Adams, 24, was changing the child’s diaper when he became frustrated and began to squeeze the victim’s legs. He applied excessive pressure and pushed down on the victim’s legs causing fractures below both knees.
The child was in Adams’ care at the time the injuries occurred and were discovered when the mother took the child to the hospital due to “her being fussy,” the report said.
During an interview with detectives on Aug. 38, Adams allegedly admitted to the allegations. He was transported to the Pinellas County Jail and bond was set at $50,000.
