Road closed after pawn shop robbery
PINELLAS PARK – A lone gunman who attempted to rob a pawn shop on Oct. 3 caused a major road closure as he fled the scene. No one was arrested for the 3 p.m. robbery at Southern Pawn Shop, 6249 Park Blvd.

Capt. Sandy Forseth said police received a phone call from an employee inside the pawn shop that a robbery at gunpoint was in progress. Police said several employees fled to a back room while the suspect stayed in the front of the store.

Officers arrived within minutes and believed the suspect was still inside the building. Police shut down Park Boulevard in both directions. An unknown number of people were evacuated from the immediate area for their own protection.

Police said officers established communications via a cell phone with an employee inside the business. The employee, who was not identified, said the stickup man may have left the building through a side door.

Officers entered the building and removed everyone safely and confirmed that the suspect was gone.

Police said no shots were fired and there were no injuries reported during the robbery. K-9 police and other officers searched the area. It was not immediately known what, if anything, was taken during the heist. Police did not know if the suspect escaped on foot or by car. Police re-opened Park Boulevard at about 3:35 p.m. when it was confirmed the suspect was not in the immediate area. The gunman was wearing a white bandana over his face, a dark stocking cap on his head, dark glasses, a long sleeve shirt and jeans.
