Business incubator profile: Colleen’s Healthy Indulgence
Each month, Tampa Bay Newspapers will feature one of the small businesses in the city’s business incubator, Professional Entrepreneurs of Pinellas Park, located at 5663 Park Blvd. This month, we feature Colleen’s Healthy Indulgence.
PINELLAS PARK – Colleen McGann discovered the wonders of massage after a mid-1990s car accident left her with a pinched-nerve in her neck.
A registered nurse, she found that traditional medicine did little to relieve her pain. Medication left her feeling groggy and sedated.
“I felt terrible from the medication,” she said. “I wasn’t getting the recovery I wanted. It wasn’t getting to the root of the problem. It was just masking my symptoms.”
So she approached her doctor and asked if he would write her a prescription for massage therapy. He hesitated at first, but she told him, “We’ve done it your way; let’s try it my way.”
He agreed, and McGann saw results quickly.
“Within four sessions my function was so totally restored,” she said. “I thought, ‘this is fabulous.’ I firmly believe in it to unlock the body’s natural healing powers.”
She decided to get her massage license, taking classes at Lorraine’s Academy in St. Petersburg. She’s been practicing since 1998.
McGann has worked as a registered nurse since 1979 and felt massage would just add to her skill set.
She also felt that her nursing experience would come in handy as a massage therapist. She’s worked with a variety of different patients throughout her career – oncology, psychiatry, orthopedic and more.
“Hopefully, it makes me a little more well-rounded,” she said.
Her orthopedic experience is most valuable, she said, as many of her patients experience hip and knee replacements. “I think it makes me appreciate and understand a little bit more what [my massage clients] are going through.”
Primarily, McGann has focused on building a base of regular clients. She spent five years working at the Don CeSar hotel, but found it didn’t mesh with her personal philosophy as a massage therapist. A people person, she prefers to build long-term connections with her clients.
“They’re kind of like family,” she said. “I know their kids, their dogs. I know when someone is getting married.”
She offers a variety of massage types, and uses essential oils and hypoallergenic massage gel. And while she works with clients with chronic pain, she also offers her service as a way for her clients to simply relax in a fast-paced world.
“I love it. It’s a nice way to bring some comfort to people,” she said. “I want people to feel that very personalized attention. Everyone deserves to know that there’s special time set aside just for them. There are so many demands on us, I think it’s important to take some time for ourselves.”
McGann, a St. Petersburg resident, was the first person to sign a contract with the Professional Entrepreneurs of Pinellas Park.
“I love the concept. It’s an excellent opportunity to save a few dollars,” she said. “I like the whole idea of revitalization. Pinellas Park is an interesting little city. In some ways, it’s like time stood still. It has a nice small town feel.”
