Marauding pit bulls attacking, killing local cats
Article published on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007
PINELLAS PARK - Three vicious pit bulls have been roaming a quiet neighborhood near Shoecraft Park and already killed two pet cats and injured several others.

At last one other pet is missing and is feared dead or injured.

Shoecraft Park is located on 78th Avenue between 54th and 55th Streets.

Despite efforts by police and animal control agents, none of the killer dogs have been located. Residents now fear that the dogs will next turn on children who play in the park.

"I found my cat in the middle of the street and it was dead," Jennifer Cory said. "Someone has to pay for this terrible tragedy." Cory said her cat, named Sophie, had been in the family since 2004.

"She was a wonderful pet," Cory said. "A neighbor owned her and when he moved away he gave us her shot records." Cory said she returned from work about 3 p.m. and saw the cat laying in the middle of the street. Sophie was viciously attacked and had multiple puncture wounds.

A neighbor who is confined to a wheelchair heard the noise and opened the front door. The neighbor was saved from an attack only by a screen door.

About 30 feet away was the remains of another pet, George, that met a similar fate. He lived two doors away from Cory.

Neighbors said the three dogs are all different shades brown, white and multi-colored and run together. A pickup truck was seen driving slowly through the neighborhood. A "Gothic-looking woman" was seen calling for the dogs.

"No one knows who owns them," Cory said. "We are not talking about pets. We are talking about dangerous and vicious animals."

Cory believes that the dog owner needs to take responsibility for what the animals are doing. She said the dogs should not be allowed to run free in the neighborhood.

"The next victim could be a child, a senior citizen or someone in a wheelchair," Cory said.

Sophie, meanwhile, was buried in Coryıs back yard.

Persons were information are urged to call the police at 541-0758.
