PINELLAS PARK – Firefighters on Nov. 20 pulled a terrified boy from a canal just behind Vendome Village.
Officials said Zachary Mitchell, 12, of 67th Way was fishing with his dog around 1 p.m. when he fell into the canal.
Nearby residents heard the boy screaming for help and called 911.
Firefighters from Stations 34 and 35 arrived a few minutes later to find the boy struggling to hold onto the concrete side of the culvert. Attempts to grab a rescue rope failed, so Firefighter Tim Brook waded into the water and pulled Zachary to safety.
The boy was shaken up, but otherwise uninjured. The only casualty was the boy’s fishing pole which firefighters replaced with a brand new one.
