Kenneth City continues holiday tradition
Article published on Friday, Dec. 8, 2006
KENNETH CITY – Officials will hand out prizes for decorated homes this Christmas season for the 25th year in a row.

Town Clerk Nancy J. Beelman said members of the St. Petersburg Garden Club will judge homes, condominiums and apartments on Dec. 11 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Winners will be chosen that evening. Notifications and checks will be mailed shortly thereafter.

“Displays must contain some lighting and can feature any theme associated with the Christmas season,” Beelman said.

Displays can be located inside or outside of the dwelling or in an area immediately in front of the property. Inside displays must be seen from the front of the property.

“Over the years the displays have changed and are more elaborate,” Beelman said.

Some residents have moved or passed away and along with that went older Christmas displays that have been replaced by more colorful ones. Some even are animated.

“You see reindeers with heads and tails that move and even animated Santas,” Beelman said. “The older outside lights have been replaced with blinking and more colorful ones.”

The amount of participating dwellings and sizes of displays are directly relevant to the economy. When money is tight there are fewer lights. More homes and other living units are brightened up when the economy is good.

Many homes will vie for the 10 prizes that start at $100 for the first place winner to $20 for 10th place. Condo and apartment prizes range from $45 for first place to $10 for the fifth or last place winner.

House numbers and displays must be clearly visible from the street. Elected officials and town employees are not eligible to participate. Previous winners are eligible providing their display, in the opinion of the judges, has changed from the preceeding year.

The Lake Charles Drive Association will be judged separately with a total of $75 in prize money.

More information is available at Town Hall located at 6000 54th Ave. or by calling 544-6655.
