Runners start the 2007 Stampede 10K at Walsingham Park, which was won by Brian Scott of Largo in 36:31.
SEMINOLE – A field of more than 120 runners is expected Saturday, May 17, at Walsingham Park for the 15th annual Seminole Stampede 10K Run.

The 6.2-mile run gets under way at 7:45 a.m. and will be followed by a 5K run at 8 a.m. A 1-mile fun run will follow at 8:45 and an awards party at 9:15 a.m.

The runs are one of the major fundraisers each year for the Seminole Chamber of Commerce.

Organizer Harold “Doc” Kinsey said the field of runners is slowly growing and expects about the same number as a year ago.

“It’s about the same (as last year),” said Kinsey. “It might be more.”

Trophies will be handed out to the top male and female finishers in both the 5K and 10K races. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each of the various age and gender divisions for both races.

A pre-race kick-off party is set for Friday, May 16, 4 to 8 p.m., at Jim Graden’s Cardio-Karate Center, 9104 Seminole Blvd.

Runners are encouraged to attend the party to pick up their pre-race packets and join in the celebration.

Registration for the races also will be accepted at the pre-race gathering, as well as Saturday until 7:15 a.m.

Entry fee in the 5K and 10K runs is $25, and $15 for the 1-mile fun run.

All participants will receive a race T-shirt and a goody bag.

This year’s race was moved back a month due to a conflict with the race timer and almost was canceled three weeks ago due to a lack of sponsorship.

However, 10 sponsors stepped up, allowing the race to go forward. They are Waste Management of Pinellas, Progress Energy, Clarkson and Kidd, DO, PA; Synovous Bank, Suncoast Chrysler Jeep Inc., DeLoach & Hofstra, PA/Seminole Title Co., Superior Uniform Group, Indian Rocks Christian School and Jim Graden’s Cardio Karate Center and UBC.

Kinsey said the switch this year to May is temporary and the event will likely be moved back to April in 2009.

“We would like to get back to April,” he said, “but it depends on how many other races are going on.”
