City snubs revised alcohol ordinance

SEMINOLE – If the results of a June 10 City Council workshop are an indication of things to come, there will not be any changes soon in the city’s ordinances that govern establishments serving alcoholic beverages.
After narrowly defeating an earlier proposed ordinance on Oct. 9, city councilors decided at a Jan. 8 workshop to retool their efforts in the form of two ordinances – one that addresses minimum age of patrons in bars and another that would give the city’s Developmental Review Board the power to regulate businesses with a capacity of 100 or more that sell alcoholic beverages.
The ordinances were aimed primarily at two nightclubs catering to teens and young adults – Boomerz Cafe, 6990 Seminole Blvd., and Page II, 8680 Park Blvd.
Councilors saw those revisions last week and decided enough was enough.
“We beat this thing to death eight or nine months ago,” said Councilor Peter Hofstra. “Do we really need to go forward on this again?”
City Manager Frank Edmunds agreed.
“Are we seeing these issues today and is there a need to move forward?,” asked Edmunds. “I would say no.”
Councilor Thomas Barnhorn said he favored an ordinance that would prohibit patrons under age 21 from entering any business that sells alcoholic beverages.
“I think this would be advantageous to our community and not put our children in harm’s way,” he said.
Councilor Patricia Hartstein said she favored no action on the revised ordinances.
“I think we need to just put them to the side,” she said. “That way if we have a problem again we can have it ready.”
Councilor Bob Matthews agreed.
“We have state statutes,” he said. “If we have drinking issues with underaged people, the proper authorities will take care of it,” he said. “I say not to go forward.”
Under current state law, patrons under age 21 can enter establishments that serve alcoholic beverages as long as they do not consume alcoholic beverages.
