Motorcyclist dies trying to evade deputy
Article published on Tuesday, June 17, 2008
SEMINOLE – A St. Petersburg man died from injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash on June 15 in an attempt to elude a Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy.

According to investigators, Deputy Joseph McKenzie observed John Edward D’Angelo, 41, operating a motorcycle westbound on Bay Pines Boulevard at a high rate of speed about 11:30 p.m. in the vicinity of 100th Way and Bay Pines Boulevard.

McKenzie followed the motorcycle northbound on Seminole Boulevard in an attempt to make a traffic stop near 53rd Avenue and Seminole Boulevard, where the motorcycle appeared to slow down. Instead, the motorcycle made a U-turn and proceeded back south on Seminole Boulevard toward St. Petersburg.

McKenzie made the same U-turn in a further attempt to track D’Angelo, but turned off his emergency equipment when the motorcycle sped away from view.

McKenzie proceeded on the ramp to Bay Pines Boulevard and came upon the motorcycle crash involving D’Angelo. McKenzie called for paramedics, and D’Angelo was taken by ambulance to Bayfront Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

He was wearing a helmet. No one else was injured.

D’Angelo was pronounced dead just after 5 a.m. on June 16. The investigation continues.
