SEMINOLE – The Creation Station scrapbook store hosted the first-ever Home Land Freedom Fighter Award presentation July 3. The award was created to honor an outstanding police officer and firefighter.
Owner Janet Jensen said it was important to let these “freedom fighters” know how much the public appreciates them for all they do and for the battles they fight. With many wonderful nominations, it was difficult to make the selection, she said.
Winners included Officer Janie Staples of the St. Petersburg Police Department, Lt. Brad Dykens of St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue, and Michael Webb of the Madeira Beach Volunteer Fire Department.
Staples works with DARE and Police Explorers, and volunteers in many areas of the force. She works to prevent sales of alcohol and tobacco to minors.
Dykens, a firefighter and paramedic, is a member of the honor guard and participates in MDA’s “Fill the Boot.” He also organizes and runs the APBA boat races for MDA on Lake Maggorie. Dykens teaches First Responder at the Police Academy as well as first aid and CPR classes.
Webb, a state-certified firefighter and EMT, was stationed in Iraq during the last 12 months with the National Guard. While overseas, he requested fire training manuals to stay current and expand his knowledge.
Each of the winners received an award certificate and a K and Company leather album. The presentation was followed by a luncheon and an all day “Freedom Crop.”
