SEMINOLE – The cost for purchasing and erecting new street signs in the city will not be as expensive as previously projected.
Public Works Director Allen Godfrey submitted a proposal to City Council Aug. 12 to spend $20,000 in capital improvement funds, which is $40,000 less than originally targeted.
The measure passed unanimously.
“It’s a considerable cost reduction on a project originally considered by council at $50,000 to $60,000,” said City Manager Frank Edmunds. “We will use our own sources as time allows, which will save us a large amount of money.”
During a workshop discussion June 10, Edmunds presented a variety of options for street signs, including one proposal for ornamental signs that would have cost between $100,000 and $120,000.
Councilors balked at the additional cost and decided to stay with a basic design that features a blue background. Other options included a white sign with black lettering and a black sign with white lettering.
Godfrey said the city will replace a total of 394 signs.
In other action, councilors:
- Approved spending $70,000 in Transportation Impact Fee Funds for the construction of sidewalks on the west side of Ridge Road and the south side of 70th Avenue east of Seminole Boulevard.
- Authorized Edmunds to execute a project agreement with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for a 2008-09 Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program grant for $67,805. The funds will be used in connection with a future senior center project and must be used by April 30, 2011. The city must provide $22,602 in matching funds.
- Were introduced to 16 members of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office who patrol exclusively in the city.
- Voted unanimously to re-appoint Lisa Pezone to a two-year term on the Developmental Review Board.
- Annexed four homes into the city limits at 10092 109th St. N.; 10755, 10773 and 10809 Village Green Ave.
